The proposed incinerator ▶︎ Portland is known and loved for its views. The area is famous for its fresh air. But an ill wind is blowing our way. An internationally-backed company calling itself “Powerfuel Portland” has applied to Dorset Council to build a large waste incinerator at Portland Port. If it gets the go-ahead, the burner would change the face of Portland & Weymouth for generations. The chimney stack would be 85 metres high from sea level: about twice the height of Portland Bill.

A new threat to tourism and hospitality ▶︎ The tourism and hospitality sectors are reeling from Covid. From retail to restaurants, hotels to market stalls, it’s been tough for everyone. According to a recent Parliamentary report: “Coastal communities in particular will be hard hit by the decline of the tourism industry”. And it doesn’t look like a swift recovery is on the cards. In its 2020 Tourism Forecast, VisitBritain predicts that “by early 2021 we are unlikely to be back to baseline (pre-COVID) levels” in any sector of tourism.

Building an industrial waste burner just across the water from Weymouth would be kicking tourism while it’s down. People travel to Weymouth for golden sands, not grey fumes. They flock to the area for sailing, camping and artisan food; for beautiful views not chimney plumes.

Bad for business, bad for wildlife ▶︎ The incinerator site is surrounded by vulnerable marine and coastal ecosystems, putting rare species and habitats at risk. And it would put the world famous Jurassic Coast right in the firing line. The last thing anyone needs right now is more air pollution. But there’s time to stop it. A coalition of local businesses and groups has come together to fight the burner proposal. If you’d like to join the coalition, drop us a line at this address: join@coalitionagainsttheburner.org

Take action ▶︎ Tell Dorset Council that building the burner would be taking Portland & Weymouth in the wrong direction — add your name to the coalition:
